New Release: Spitfire Mk Vc Trop

2074_Spitfire_Cover560

Order Yours Here

The Spitfire was Britain’s premier fighter aircraft during World War II. More than 20,000 of this aircraft were built for the Royal Air Force (RAF) and those of the Commonwealth and Allies. The Spitfire appeared just in time to take part in the Battle of Britain, where its reputation as a war-winning thoroughbred greatly eclipsed the RAF’s more numerous Hurricanes. By 1941 the Spitfire became the main fighter aircraft used for air-to-air combat, with the Hurricane being mainly relegated to the ground attack role.

The Spitfire was designed by RJ Mitchell, an engineer for the Supermarine Aviation, to be a high speed interceptor fighter. Its characteristically thin, elliptical shaped wings, mated to the incredibly powerful Rolls-Royce V-12 Merlin engine, gave it an air-speed advantage over most of its contemporaries.

Deficiencies, such as weak armament and performance of the Merlin engine during negative G turns, led to rapid development of improved Spitfire designs. By 1942 the negative G performance was resolved in the Spitfire Mk V.  The “C” wing configuration housed four 20mm Hispano cannons. This greatly improved the Spitfire’s offensive punch. Brickmania’s Mk Vc Trop is based on this configuration, “Topicalised” with desert camouflage and a larger air filter used in high-dust environments.

Spitifire Mk Vc vitals:

  • Dimensions: Wingspan 36 ft 10 in (11.23 m), Length 29 ft 11 in (9.13 m), Height 11 ft 5 in (3.49 m)
  • Weight: Empty 5100 lbs (2313 kg), Loaded 6745 lb (3078 kg), Max 7300 lb (3311 kg)
  • Armament: 4 x 20mm Hispano Mk II cannon, 2 x 250 or 1 x 500 pound bombs
  • Speed: 374 mph (601kmh)
  • Range: 470 miles (756 km)
  • Service Ceiling: 36,500 ft (11,125 m)

Additional information about this Brickmania custom Lego® kit:

2074-spitfire-action-560.jpg

As World War I raged in Europe, the US Army found itself in need of a modern artillery piece should America decide to become involved. The French 75mm Modele 1897 was the best canditiate and is widely considered by historians to be the first modern cannon. It was the first to be fitted with a hydropneumatic recoil mechanism, which meant it could be fired and reloaded without having to reposition the gun. When America entered the war, the US Army adopted the French design for it’s field artillery batteries, and fielded more than 1900 guns by the war’s end. Domestic production began in spring of 1918, but most guns used during the war were French manufactured. The M1897 again saw service in World War II, with many being exported to Great Britain under lend-lease agreements, and others being adapted to anti-tank guns.

The ZiS-3 76mm Field Gun (Officially designated M1942 Divisional Gun) was the most common medium artillery piece used by the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War. Due to the innovated addition of the massive muzzle brake, pre-war 76mm gun barrels could be mated to the light weight ZiS-2 anti-tank gun carriage. This created a compact, mobile, inexpensive, versatile and easy to produce artillery piece that was called, “A masterpiece of artillery systems design.” by Joseph Stalin. The ZiS-3 gun was the main armament used for the Su-76 self-propelled gun. Most ZiS-3 guns were withdrawn from the Red Army after World War II and were later supplied to satellite states. The ZiS-3 was used by communist forces in both the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Restock: M3 Grant British Medium Tank

2068_M3Grant_CoverLx560

Order Yours Here
At the outbreak of World War Two, the US Army’s tank force was woefully unequipped to handle the latest European tank developments. The existing American tanks (M1 and M2) were inadequately armed and armored compared to the German panzer forces that had swept across Europe in the early months of the war. Facing the very real possibility of being pulled into a European conflict and under pressure to supply material to the beleaguered British army, an urgent call for a more powerful new tank was issued.

American industry heeded the call and began work on a tough new tank design with heavier armor and a 75 mm main gun. This new tank would eventually be known as the M4 Sherman medium tank, a complex and powerful tank that would take years to design and produce. In the meantime the M3 medium tank was rushed into production, mounting a 75mm main gun in an antiquated hull-mounted sponson. The M3 also has a 37mm high-velocity anti-tank gun in a turret mounted offset to the left top of the bulky hull. There was an additional commander’s cupola with a 30 cal. machine gun mounted on top of the 37mm gun turret (giving a turret on turret effect).

The British Army found themselves urgently in need of replacement tanks for those abandoned in Dunkirk after the fall of France. The United States was able to provide the newly minted M3 in great numbers through the Lend-Lease program. While the British bought large numbers of the original M3 design, they also ordered large numbers with a specially designed turret, which had a large compartment at the rear to house a radio and eliminated the commander’s cupola. The British dubbed the original M3 the “Lee” and the modified version was called the “Grant.”

Both variants of the M3 played a pivotal role in the North Africa campaigns. While mounting of the 75mm gun low in the hull and the over-all high silhouette of the tank had many disadvantages, the M3 proved itself effective and reliable on the battlefield. For a brief time the M3’s 75mm gun dominated battlefields verses the German Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks. Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery concluded his successful route of the German and Italian armies in North Africa while riding in a M3 Grant (it is preserved today in London’s Imperial War Museum).

Unfortunately, the M3’s battlefield dominance proved short lived as Germany up-gunned their own tanks and developed the more powerful Tiger and Panther tanks. By 1943 the M3 was declared obsolete and was phased out of service in the European theater as the M4 Sherman became available in large numbers. The M3 continued service in the Pacific theatre until the end of World War Two, where it proved effective against infantry and the diminutive Japanese tank forces. Although the design was greatly flawed and out of date, the M3 proved to be a satisfactory interim solution for American and British needs, with more than 6000 being produced between August 1941 and December 1942.

M3 Grant Vital Statistics

  • Crew: 6 (driver, 2x gunner, 2x loader & commander)

The Chaffee was a light tank introduced at the end of World War II to replace the worn out and under-gunned M3/M5 Stuart tank. The Chaffee first saw action against the German Ardennes offensive—known today as the Battle of the Bulge. Lightly armored and fast, the M24 was a nimble scout vehicle that was armed with the same 75mm gun as the M4 Sherman tank. The M24 Chaffee was retired from US service after the Korean War, being replaced by the M41 Walker Bulldog. Around the world, Chaffees have soldiered on in other armed services to modern times. During the Vietnam War, the South Vietnamese Army effectively fielded Chaffee tanks that were left behind when the French Colonial Army withdrew in the late 1950s.

About the Long Range Desert Group

The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) was a British military formation created in the summer of 1940, during the war in North Africa. Its primary role was to provide long range surveillance of troop movements behind the Italian and German lines. Its secondary role was to make lightning strikes on targets deep behind enemy lines, causing a great deal of confusion, terror and panic in the rear areas. The LRDG was organized into a series of patrols comprised of  volunteers from New Zealand, England and southern Rhodesia and would often work in isolated patrol areas for weeks at a time. The LRDG was credited as being one of the most successful unconventional units of World War II and routinely cited for providing the best source of up to date intelligence on enemy troop movements.

GMC 30 CWT TRUCK

The long distances of the patrols required special vehicles, for which civilian trucks were acquired and customized to the LRDG needs. Each patrol contained several heavily modified GMC 30 CWT (Imperial Hundredweight) trucks, each carried a three man crew and a variety of heavy weapons and supplies. Special equipment included sand channels attached to the side of each truck, which were used in the event the truck became stuck in deep sand. The trucks were also outfitted with extra large radiators connected by a hose to a specially designed condenser cannister. This allow the LRDG trucks to operate over long distances in the extremely hot desert environment.
