During World War II, the US Army doctrine for tank warfare dictated that the role of tanks on the battlefield would be similar to cavalry of generations before: They would use their speed and firepower to exploit breaches in the enemy lines and cause havoc in rear areas. The task of fighting other tanks was given to special anti-tank units, who would fight oncoming enemy tank attacks with towed anti-tank guns or rush to the endangered sector in special armored vehicles called tank destroyers. Early tank destroyers were no more than open-top M3 half track trucks with WW1 vintage 75mm guns fitted on top in a forward-facing mount. These proved to be extremely unsuited for the task and many were destroyed in early encounters with Axis armor in North Africa. A highly mobile, tracked vehicle, with a powerful gun mounted in a fully traversable turret, was called for.

The auto manufacturer Buick was tasked with creating such a vehicle and it’s result was the legendary M18 Hellcat. It’s official designation was the M18 76mm Gun Motor Carriage and was the US Army’s only purposely designed vehicle whose primary function was killing enemy tanks. Priority was given to mobility and firepower at the expense of armor protection, traits for which the Tank Destroyer units developed special tactics. During the Battle of the Bulge, M18s used their speed to secure key crossroads in advance of enemy units, helping to turn the tide of battle. While the tank destroyer doctrine would be abandoned after World War II, the M18 could still boast of the highest kill-to-loss ratio of any US armored vehicle during the war.

Limited to a production run of 99 kits!

The P-47 was the largest single-seat, single-engine fighter used in World War II. It was developed by Republic Aviation and was the first aircraft equipped with the powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine (later used in the Navy’s F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair fighters). The Thunderbolt featured thick armor protection for the pilot and was heavily armed with eight .50 caliber Browning M2 machine guns and up to 2500 pounds of rockets or bombs. With the addition of external drop tanks, the P-47 was able to provide fighter escort to bomber formations deep into enemy occupied Europe. While the P-47 was a competent air-to-air fighter, it’s massive firepower and speed made it an ideal ground attack aircraft. It’s prowess for hunting tanks made it the scourge of German panzer forces in Europe, forcing them to stay hidden during daylight hours. Ground attack versions of the P-47 were delivered to the European Theater of Operations in time for the D-Day Invasions, for which all Allied aircraft were painted with characteristic black and white “invasion stripes.” More than 15,000 were built during World War II, making it a close rival of the P-51 Mustang for most widely used American fighter aircraft of the war.

After serving magnificently in World War II, she was decommissioned from the US Navy and is currently preserved as a war memorial in Wilmington, NC.

2083-Pak38-Cover-560

The Pak 38 5cm Anti-Tank Gun was developed as a response to shortcomings found in the Pak 36 3.7cm AT Gun used during the Spanish Civil War. It was put into mass production in 1939 for the Wehrmacht and proved to be one of the few anti-tank weapons capable of penetrating the armor of the T-34 tanks. While larger anti-tank guns would be introduced, the Pak 38 continued to be useful for the remainder of the war due to its small size and good ballistic performance.

2083-Pak38-product-profile-560

Additional information about this Brickmania custom Lego® kit:

  • Gun is posable with a limited range of elevation
  • Carriage and gun can be “broken down” for transport
  • Can be towed behind any vehicle with a hook type hitch
  • 1/35 scale matches other Brickmania models
  • The over-all color scheme of this model is dark gray
  • Includes 47 LEGO elements.

The USS Missouri is the most famous American battleship (second only to the USS Arizona). The Missouri was ordered in 1940 and commissioned in 1944.  She fought in the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa during World War II.  The USS Missouri is famous for holding the surrender ceremony of the Japanese Government on it’s deck, September 2nd 1945.  After the Korean war the USS Missouri was retired from active service. USS Missouri along with three other Iowa Class Battleships were reactivated and extensively modernized.  The USS Missouri participated in The Gulf War in 1991 providing tomahawk missile and naval gunfire support to Operation Desert storm. This 1/700th scale replica uses 100% authentic LEGO elements and is perfect for display on desks or mantles.  The USS Missouri is in the same scale as Brickmania’s USS North Carolina kit.
